In this century, important climate variations (temperature, humidity, wind…) will occur due to climate change. In dense urban areas, the heat island effect due to the city characteristics (low albedo mineral surfaces, high-density buildings…) is today well known but we wonder how it will affect future climate conditions in an urban context.
When heat waves occur, the urban heat island effect is amplified and might induce very hot temperatures. Since summers will be increasingly warm in France and heat waves more and more frequent, we are interested in the evolution of the climate in the urban context. We are facing two main uncertainties : the way the climate will evolve at the country scale, and the way the city will evolve itself. In order to face climate change, cities are nowadays developing adaptation plans to reduce the urban heat island such as green roofs, high albedo surfaces, etc.
Integrated in the lab, the internship will work jointly with a researcher in a project about building design under the effect of climate change. In this context, different climate scenarios at the country scale are already selected for this study. Moreover, a model has been implemented in a Python program to assess the temperature changes in the urban canopy from the countryside.
The tasks of the intern will be
- To select heat island evolution scenarios for specific neighborhoods in La Rochelle and Paris
- To develop a parametric study taking into account climate scenarios and city development scenarios along the century
- To implement these scenarios into the model already developed (programming in Python) and to participate in improving the current model
- To propose tendencies of future climate conditions in the urban canopy under the different scenarios
- To reflect on cooling needs for the buildings in the urban canopy
Characterizing the future climate in the city will allow us to understand more precisely the evolution of the climate in an urban context, especially during heat waves. This will help up deepen our knowledge of possible overheating in buildings and establishing cooling needs.
Candidate’s expected competencies
Studying at the master level, the candidate should know about buildings physics and energy use of buildings. He will be expected to program in Python so some programming skills would be an asset. The candidate will have to be a hard worker, rigorous and curious.
